Soil and Water Conservation

Substantial degradation of drainage basins due to population growth and intense land-use pressure has been observed since the 1960s. Climate change has further reinforced this trend. These dynamics can be reversed with water-spreading weirs and stabilisation measures in the drainage basin.

For several years, water-spreading weirs complement the previously available rehabilitation measures for drainage basins. They are an additional, economical and effective water management option for valleys, where they supplement retention basins, small impoundment dams and micro-weirs to intensify agricultural production in the valleys. Unlike other techniques, these weirs are especially well-suited for the large-scale rehabilitation of wide and shallow dry valleys that have been seriously degraded.

Water-spreading weirs ensure that soils are regularly flooded and supplied with water and sediment. Together wih stabilisation measures in the drainage basin, they increase and diversify agricultural production by making available more arable land, raising yields and making additional crop cycles possible.

This contributes substantially to food security and poverty reduction for the beneficiaries.

Our Competencies:

  • Design and planning of appropriate measures to secure and recover agricultural land
  • Development and support of construction with special emphasis on the participatory approach
  • Support during the integration of the measures into the municipal and regional planning
