Romania, Technical Assistance for five Counties

The objective of the project was to ensure compliance with the national and EU legislations within the transition periods agreed between Romania and the EU for the environmental sector, assistance to the project promoters in developing local capacity for future project development and the definition of a long term phased investment programme.

The project included the following activities:

  • Selective collection, collection, transfer and transport (14 transfer stations, 25 civic amenity sites) and storage of solid residues
  • Set-up and management of adequate waste treatment and disposal facilities (6 new ecological landfills, 1 compost facility, 5 sorting plants, etc.)
  • Improvement of the environmental situation by closure of inappropriate waste deposits (22 landfills and about 1,200 dumpsites)
  • Institutional strengthening by forming of Intercommunity Development Associations, adjustment of Romanian legislation and capacity building
