Tanzania, 7 Towns Urban Upgrading Programme

The water and sanitation project covers seven urban centres in Tanzania. The overall objective of the program is to improve health, productivity and well being of the population residing in the urban areas and of the poor in urban and peri-urban areas. 

 

Project characteristics:

  • Project towns range from 44,000 to 160,000 inhabitants (total project area population 675,000)
  • Present water resources are from lakes and groundwater (Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika, dams, wells)
  • Old distribution networks with limited metering and control devices
  • Limited sewerage collection and treatment services available (mainly on-site sanitation and off-site services in towns centres)
  • Water treatment plants with limited capacity and with old and worn-out electrical and mechanical installations.
  • Limited operation and maintenance personnel available

The specific objectives for the programme are:

  • Increase water coverage and extend services to lower income and peri-urban areas of the towns
  • Enhance and extend sewerage and sanitation facilities adequately
  • Strengthen local capacities to improve service quality and reliability
  • Improve operational and financial performance levels and
  • Reduce physical and commercial losses, so as to satisfy increasing and suppressed demand
