“Farmers rely on treated wastewater” Nablus Wastewater Treatment Plant Project presented in KfW Stories, the digital magazine of KfW Group

In 2010 the Water Supply and Sanitation Department of Nablus Municipality in Palestine had started a water supply and sanitation project with support of GKW Consult and Lahmeyer International (now Tractebel Engineering GmbH). The project has been realised within the Palestinian-German Development Cooperation and financed by the KfW Development Bank.

The project comprised the construction of the Nablus West Wastewater Treatment Plant with a 10 km length sewer trunk line and a 4,000 m³ capacity stormwater tank. The objective was to protect the environment by preventing wastewater to flow along the Zomer valley. Now, farmers use the treated wastewater for irrigating their agricultural lands. And, protecting the groundwater resources helps to improve water shortage in the region.

At present, the Nablus West Wastewater Treatment Plant is treating wastewater for a population equivalent of 150,000 PE, thus covering the west area of Nablus and five villages Deir Sharaf, Beit Iba, beit Wazan, Qusin and Zawata. It is the second of its type in the West Bank.
