New energy efficiency project in Bahia, Brazil

Existing WWTP Jacuípe

GKW has been awarded a new energy efficiency project in the State of Bahia, Brazil. The project stands in the context of the “Deutsche Klima- und Technologieinitiative” (DKTI, German Climate and Technology Initiative), with focus on improvement of energy efficiency and reduction of green-house gas emissions in the wastewater treatment sector and aims at the identification of reasonable investments to fit into the program.

Investments can be the rehabilitation and/or extension of existing wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) or the construction of a new WWTP.

Under financing of KfW, the project has started beginning of November 2015 and consists of the following three components:

  • Component 1: Preliminary study to improve operation and energy efficiency of three existing WWTP (Vitoria da Conquista, Jacuípé I and Subaé) in particular by the reuse of the biogas already produced on the WWTPs.
  • Component 2: Technical-economic comparison of possible alternatives of a secondary treatment step (following UASB) in three envisaged WWTP (Brumado, Camaçari and Bacia Pojuca)
  • Component 3: Feasibility study about central or decentralized sludge treatment of the three existing WWTP Jacuípe I, Jacuípe II and Subaé as well as the future WWTP Bacia Pojuca, which are all located in the area of Feira da Santana, north of Salvador, capital of Bahia.
