New project in Pakistan

With a population growing rapidly, and a percentage of urban population sharply increasing, Pakistan’s cities are facing huge challenges. The urban services (water supply, wastewater collection and treatment, storm water drainage, waste disposal, urban road networks, and transportation) are increasingly unable to respond to urban population and economic growth.

Asian Development Bank, in support of the Government of Punjab, has approved a Project Readiness Financing Loan to remediate the situation and to facilitate provision of high-priority urban infrastructure investments and capacity support to seven towns in Punjab province (Sargodha, Rahim Yar Khan, Muzaffargarh, Bahawalpur, DG Khan, Multan and Rawalpindi), with the objective to improve access to quality urban basic services and enhanced utility facilities.

Tractebel GKW (now GKW Consult) and its local partners National Development Consultants, Osmani & Company and Jers Consultancy have been awarded a contract for consulting services for Engineering Design and Construction Management (EDCM, Phase 1). Services comprise spatial planning, feasibility study and detailed engineering design of water, sanitation and solid waste infrastructure, including the preparation of an integrated master plan for urban land use, water, sanitation, solid waste, and urban transport until 2050. Assistance in procurement support for the seven project towns complete the portfolio. The first phase has started in early 2021 and will be completed by beginning of 2023.
