Wastewater Collection & Treatment

Since our establishment in 1953, wastewater and sludge treatment have been core fields of our work. We support public and private clients throughout all phases of a project, from initial assessment and planning to design, construction and commissioning.

Range of services

Our services cover both new facilities and the rehabilitation, expansion or adaptation of existing systems. In doing so, we draw on the expertise of specialists from a wide range of disciplines to develop technically sound, reliable and context-appropriate solutions for wastewater collection and treatment.

We develop solutions that support environmental protection, reliable service delivery and sustainable system operation.

Our competencies include:

  • Master planning and investment studies
  • Feasibility studies
  • Financial and economic analysis, tariff studies and socio-economic studies
  • Preliminary and detailed design
  • Preparation of tender documents and assistance during tender processes
  • Contract administration and construction supervision
  • Advisory services for utility management
  • Programme and project management

Wastewater solutions

The reliable collection and conveyance of stormwater and wastewater are essential for effective urban drainage and environmentally sound wastewater management. Well-functioning drainage systems ensure the safe transfer of wastewater to treatment facilities, reduce the risk of flooding and help to prevent disturbances and health or safety risks for the population.

Depending on climatic, urban, environmental and other local conditions, drainage systems may be designed as combined, separate or partially separate systems. We support our clients in defining the most appropriate system configuration and in developing technically sound solutions for stormwater and wastewater collection. Our services include the design of open channels, pipelines and special sewer profiles, as well as stormwater retention, stormwater treatment, overflow structures, drainage facilities and pumping stations.

Our competencies include:

  • Stormwater and wastewater master plans
  • Modelling and design of urban drainage systems using computerised tools
  • Preparation of tender documents for wastewater collection networks
  • Rehabilitation of sewer systems using trenchless technologies
  • Construction supervision of wastewater collection systems

Wastewater management is a key element of environmental protection. Effective collection, treatment and disposal help to protect rivers, lakes and coastal waters from pollution and support the sustainable management of water resources. Alongside established treatment processes, increasingly stringent environmental requirements and growing public awareness also call for the application of advanced and innovative technologies.

We develop comprehensive solutions for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment, taking into account both ecological requirements and economic viability. Whether for the rehabilitation, expansion or new construction of treatment facilities, our aim is to provide technically sound and cost-effective solutions adapted to local conditions and project-specific requirements.

Depending on the characteristics of the wastewater and the treatment objectives, our solutions may include wastewater ponds, trickling filters, activated sludge systems, membrane technologies, tertiary treatment, sludge treatment, settling ponds / lagoons, cogeneration and water reuse schemes. We also develop advanced process solutions for the removal of persistent organic trace substances and use modern software tools to support the evaluation and optimisation of treatment concepts.

Our competencies include:

  • Feasibility studies for new and existing wastewater treatment plants
  • Design and tendering of tailor-made solutions for wastewater treatment plants and the recovery or beneficial use of treated effluent, sludge and biogas
  • Development of treatment concepts for municipal and industrial wastewater using conventional and innovative technologies
  • Energy optimisation studies
  • Detailed design for public and private clients
  • Construction supervision
  • Technical assistance for operation and maintenance

The reuse of treated effluent is becoming an increasingly important component of wastewater management and a valuable option for mobilising non-conventional water resources. This applies not only in water-stressed regions, but also wherever water resources need to be used more efficiently and sustainably. We develop concepts and technical solutions for the reuse of treated effluent in applications such as aquifer recharge, industrial processes, agriculture and the irrigation of urban green areas or golf courses.

Depending on the intended reuse application, we define the appropriate treatment approach, including tertiary treatment where required. Our services cover not only the treatment process itself, but also the development of the reuse application, such as irrigation systems, hydrogeological studies and the design of aquifer recharge systems.

Our competencies include:

  • Feasibility studies and design of processes and installations for effluent reuse in agriculture, industrial production and aquifer recharge
  • Design of wastewater treatment facilities for effluent reuse
  • Hydrogeological investigations and design of aquifer recharge systems
  • Identification of suitable areas and crops for agricultural effluent reuse
  • Site supervision
  • Contract administration and programme management

Large investment programmes implemented by public utilities or governmental organisations require effective planning, coordination and control throughout the entire implementation period. Programme management and technical assistance services help to ensure that investments are properly prepared, budgets are monitored, implementation processes are coordinated, and consultants or contractors are supervised effectively.

In addition to organisational and procedural support, successful implementation often also requires the strengthening of institutional capacities. Training and skills development can therefore be an important part of project implementation, helping organisations improve procedures, build internal expertise and manage investments more effectively over the long term.

Our competencies include:

  • Investment planning and programme management
  • Monitoring and control
  • Institutional development and capacity building
